April 2021 Update!
almost 3 years ago – Sat, May 01, 2021 at 04:30:18 AM

 Here we go!

This month has been crazy and a lot of things have been done.

We improved the Rex textures and added a dynamic blood and wounds mask option. Now it will be more visually integrated with...well, killing things.
Our main priority this month (and next one) has been Player <-> Rex mechanics. It's not ready yet, but our goal is to make the Rex interactions as natural - and scary- as possible. It will detect you by sound, sight and smell...and it won't let you go easily.  We are still balancing its walk/run speed, its "hunting" behaviour, and adding more obstacles, hideouts and actions that will give you options of escaping...sometimes.

Dynamo Flashlight fully working! Re-charging emits sound...be aware
Even if you hide, the Rex will follow your scent and will try to lure you out
Covering with Mud mechanic done. This will hide your scent, but won't make you invisible
About running way...you will be able to look behind you quickly, jump over obstacles and slide through low barriers or holes

And this one is not ready yet. We are exploring some ways on making "gory" first person point of view deaths. No easy, but we are getting there.

Nom,Nom,Nom!

  UNREAL'S METAHUMANS

Epic has released this amazing tool and we have been exploring it...more than we should I must say. We don't have the team and the "hardware" necessary to get its full potential yet (such as Facial Capture or Mocap stuits)... But firsts -and manual- approaches have been very productive:

MetaHumans tool is still on an early access stage and it's a bit limited, but for us it's been a bless having the possibility of been able to create high quality custom characters totally intregrated with the engine. It's awesome.
In fact, we have prepared a small cinematic promotional trailer using Metahumans custom creations, rendered in engine entirely:

Some making of:

And that's it for now. We keep polishing and progressing at good pace. Next update is going to be great!

March 2021 Update!
about 3 years ago – Tue, Mar 30, 2021 at 03:04:50 AM

Hi there!

First of all, we wanted to thank you all the feedback and support shown this days after releasing the first prototype. It was a very welcome surprise, reviews have been overwhelming positive, and even it has been covered in some big youtube channels with huge enjoyment. This has motivated us even more!

For this month, we wanted to show you some things we are exploring and playing around. Notice, its still pure code and testing. We have not get into visuals, animations and art stuff, yet. Those aspects will be improved and fixed in due time.

  • GAME MECHANICS

Dead bodies interaction

We thought that we can spice things a bit giving players the hability to drag medium size dead animals (and humans). It's a mechanic we are loving right now, it opens a lot of new possibilities and situations. As almost everything in Goner, this hability has its pros and cons: Dragging the whole animal will let you use it as a decoy or even to set up traps for predators. As we develop the "Smell Detection" system, this can end up being very handy and open for creative setups, sometimes. But, dragging an animal this size has its risks: Movement will be slower and it will have a stamina and fatigue cost.

Oh, and maybe you can drag it to a save hidden place and keep it whole... for later. Just be careful nothing finds its trail...

Dragging dead animals hability

And, if dragging the whole thing is just to risky or just pointless for certain situations, we want to give you the chance of taking just what you need:

Dead animal dismemberment

This last one is not ready yet, but the idea is that you will be able to hit all the limbs and head with a weapon (like an axe, for example) and pick up the pieces you need. We may add that you can carry the remaining torso on your shoulders.

Tar pits

As you may now, we changed the main island's biome from a jungle to a temperate rainforest. So, we had to adapt some mechanics, materials, fauna... The Tar pits are one example of these adaptations. You will still get stuck in them and dragged down. You can still move, but very slowly...so, the best choice you have is not to go in too deep and just try to get back. Tar pits will be very dangerous if you are being chased...

But! This new approach give us more materials and crafting opportunities: You will be able to gather some sticky brea from them (with the right container) and also cover them with leaves and branches to set up a very mischievous trap, as enemies won't detect the covered tar pit and fall right into it.

We have 3 biomas almost ready: Rocky Coast (Start), General Forest and Grasslands that takes about 1km of the whole map:

And...now you will discover how you got into the island:

  • Community Goals

Last community goal reached! 500 Instagram follows! Thanks everyone! This means we are now revealing two new dinosaurs that will be added to the game:

Leptoceratops

Don't be fooled by its cute appearance. This tiny herbivore dinosaur with parrot-like beak has a weird defense mechanism. It will make a piercing shrill noise when threatened or startled...attracting predators around.  On the other hand, it is very good looking for special and rare natural food sources and medicinal plants...If you find one, you could be close to something useful.

Pachycephalosaurus

A bipedal herbivore dinosaur with a temper. It can be as dangerous as a predator. It may not eat you, but it can crush all your bones with a single head-butt. It will be more aggressive when found alone, but will have a more relaxed, mild attitude when in herds as they feel protected...but yeah, don't get cocky. Just...don't mess with the Pachycephalosaurus.

And that's about it for now. We may have more we could show, we are working in little things step by step, but they are still in a very early state. Things such as controller features like sliding, climbing, covering and more systems. You can also chop trees and there is a general neutral animal AI moving around the map. But this is material for next update briefing!

See you!

First prototype is here!
about 3 years ago – Thu, Mar 04, 2021 at 05:14:49 AM

Hi there!

We have been working non-stop and finally, we think we can share a little tease with you. We have enclosured a tiny piece of the map for you to explore and play around. This is our very first prototype (of a series), not a demo or anything like that. You can expect some things rough around the edges, open for in-development improvements. As we promised, we will be releasing little pieces like this one periodically, for you to try for free, and give us some feedback. We want to make this right, with you all.

BIOME AND FEATURES CHANGES

As you will notice, we have discarded the jungle environment. We think it was too "topical" and was not fitting the lore very well. So, we are now looking at temperate rainforest as the main biome for the island. We have taken the beautiful -and creepy- Hoh Rainforest (Washington, EEUU) as the main reference. This has been our main reason for development delays, as we needed to model some custom trees and vegetation; and adapt some game mechanics thought for a jungle setting. We think we have some great ideas to implement every feature such as the quicksands (now tar pits) or the liana swinging. Same happened with food sources, materials and animals we had prepared previously. It is a lot of extra work, but we think it is worth it.

FIND A WAY TO ENTER THE ANCIENT TEMPLE

This first little prototype is meant for testing the new environment setting.  We disabled some core mechanics such as the player stats, inventory, damage...It's more like a walking/exploring simulator. You will find some points of interest and some pieces of lore, that's about it. We expect to give you some more juicy gameplay in the next updates, as we keep polishing some features we are working on.

This teaser doesn't represent the final product, not even close.

GIVE US SOME FEEDBACK!

We would love to hear from you! This game is for you to enjoy, so anything we can do better, let us know.

November 2020 Update!
over 3 years ago – Fri, Nov 06, 2020 at 12:07:31 PM

Hi! We know it's been more than we expected (and desired) for an update to come up, we apologize for that. It's been a crazy and busy couple of months after the campaign, but we think we are now ready to start sharing progress and be more active around here and in social media, in general.

As some of you may know, we started developing Goner using Unity 3D and it's HDR pipeline. The main reason we have been a bit absent it's because we have been working on a full engine migration. Now, Goner is being developed in Unreal 4 engine. We were thinking about doing this for a while and we finally made the leap. We feel -and know- this project deserves the right engine, and Unreal just give us the right tools out of the box. But, this means that we had to take a step back to a pre-production state, where we needed to organize and plan a new development pipeline and get use to a different workflow, also find and get more people into the team to help us with the transition.

Now, things are being made. The game tests we have made since, are looking awesome, better... and running more smoothly. Progress is being made quicker and we couldn't be more excited. We have being working really hard and met awesome professionals willing to help us and be part of the project.

We promised since the beginning that we would like Goner to be a public and open development. We have been always active on our Discord server, sharing and talking to the awesome growing community this project has now. We invite you to join us there if you didn't already. You can talk to us directly, check for updates, share your thoughts about the game and meet amazing -and funny- people.  A big number of paleo experts, fans and artists are gathering here sharing their knowledge and helping us to make our dinosaurs more accurate. If you ever wanted to learn more about this animals, we have just the right place for you.

We have also made our Trello board public. There you will be able to check progress being made in real time. We will be sharing everything with you, even funny bugs.

Now, as the team and the community grows, more people is getting involved in the creation of Goner's creatures. Every dinosaur is being redone guided by paleo sources and the incredible skills of our new dinosaur modeler/animator as you could see in the Alamosaurus update. Also, our main character Anthony Sunder had a nice face wash and it's model and animations has been improved. Check it out in our Trello board!

Skapp: Turn your phone into a skateboard

Before we go we wanted to share this project we found interesting: Skapp is a skateboarding video game in which you control your board with your phone's gyroscope and your gamepad.

"How many times have you found yourself playing with your phone emulating skate tricks? Miss the days where all of your friends would have a fingerboard in their pockets? Would you like to know a brand new kind of gameplay like you’ve never seen before?"

"Skapp brings the latest innovation to the skateboarding genre by using the gyroscope and accelerometer of our smartphones and our gamepad to bring the wildest skateboarding tricks to the palm of your hand!
